#21emBODY | EYES

Eyes

This weekend, Phoenix and I were out walking our dog Sedona when all of a sudden we stopped dead in our tracks and froze.

After a brief moment, Phoenix was the first to move.

He ran rapidly down the sidewalk and almost threw himself completely to the spot where our favorite tree once stood.

The same tree Phoenix first climbed.  The tree that I used to sit under in its shade when Phoenix was in a stroller.  A tree, that many times I came to with a question — a prayer — a secret to tell.

It was gone.

All that was left was a patch of dirt and some wood shavings in its place.

Phoenix looked up at me with the most distraught and pain I’ve ever seen on his face and asked “what happened to our tree, mama. Why did they cut it down?”

And before I could even utter a word of grief and disbelief, both of us started to cry.

I think deep under the surface, she was crying too.
