I’ve got a thing for painting in sketchbooks. No

I’ve got a thing for painting in sketchbooks. Not just “painting” — but dedicating each book to a specific intention. Sometimes it’s tied to a medium. Sometimes it’s a color I’m gaga over. Sometimes it’s a place or season in my life — a whole era, sealed between two covers.

This specific book is all about my raw emotion — feeling what I’m feeling & pouring it onto the page.

The rule I set for this book: Don’t cap the energy. Don’t tame it. Don’t make it “something.” Let the emotion lead. Let the painting be what it needs to be.

When I showed up here I felt like I was drowning in grief. So I drowned the page in water and color. The paper warped, creating a womb. I moved the pools of blue with my fingers, then grabbed a red pastel and dragged it hard across the surface until the paper ripped. The water rushed to the tears like blood filling wounds.

And that was it.

That was the painting.

Not a “background.” Not something to fix or decorate later. Just raw, unflinching expression. No apologies. No polish.

16 years ago today I hosted my very first in-person retreat. It was at @andrea_leblond’s Terra Vista Studios. Who would have thunk that I’d go on hosting multiple international retreats EVERY SINGLE YEAR since — including the infamous 2020.

In 3 weeks I’m hosting my first online retreat, it’s called Root & Release.

It’s for artists who ache to feel fully alive — who know their painting practice isn’t a hobby — but the pulse of their being.

For artists who are done, done, DONE sacrificing their studio time, silencing their desires, & starving the needs of their Artist Soul.

For the artists who crave the mystical and untamed — who are willing to face the unknown, to court mystery, and to awaken their own raw magic.

For the artists standing on the edge — ripe, trembling, ready to burst open and let it all spill out — yet still held back by the invisible grip of fear and resistance.

For the artists who would do anything to drop into their bodies, feel the fire of their Artist Soul, and create with wild, uncompromising freedom.

Here’s a peek at what I’ve been making in the studio recently & a big thanks to Andrea of @creativedreamincubator for inspiring me to just show up & make a video.

I have to be honest…this year I’ve really lost a lot of my “umph” for Instagram. I started off 2025 with the intention of documenting my process — but my motivation ebbs & flows & sometimes tanks altogether.

Anyways, I agree with Andrea 100% when she mentioned that we are all drowning in AI — so showing up in all our unscripted-unedited-unfiltered human-ness is so dang important.

So here’s to more turning on the camera & just winging it & giving a good ol’ fashioned middle finger to all the powers that be who have squeezed the fun out of social media.

I feel like I’ve been doing a total deep cleanse

I feel like I’ve been doing a total deep cleanse on my studio for months now 🤪— but this weekend I got serious about it & released, recycled, donated, & even gathered things together that I plan to sell. I’m making some major space, baby!! I guess it’s no surprise that space is showing up in my studio practice too.

So I started this new little studio practice of pa

So I started this new little studio practice of painting very fast drawings in newsprint each morning. I’ll do about 7 or 8 in a row — taking about 5-10 minutes each. The whole point is to go fast & not think about it — but to discover something new.

Some drawings are pure garbage, others look like stuff I’ve overdone already and then 💥 💥💥a little gem appears and gets my ideas & inspiration pumping….kinda like this one. 🖤
