I spent most of today helping my son Spring clean

I spent most of today helping my son Spring clean & reorganize his bedroom & now I’m sitting outside with my sketchbook, feet propped up, Rocket by my side, thinking about a larger piece I plan on making as part of my Into the Heart program I’m hosting online. I wanna kick out a few more sketches before the sun sets.

For me, art making is always involves part following my intuition, part playing with ideas in a seeking kind of way, & part just seeing where the whole dang thing takes me.

I’ve been in Sedona this weekend celebrating my son’s 12th birthday. We’ve been doing a lot of hiking & a lot of eating. But I’ve been able to sneak in a little sketching last night (check out my stories) & yes — you better believe it I brought my red sketchbook with me!! A few weeks ago I got the flu from hell & it’s been taking me awhile to get over it. I’m finally feeling human again & getting back into the swing of things in the studio. But while I was sick, I still tended to my creative practice — even a teeny tiny bit a day. Thanks to my colored pencils & boring sketchbook I keep on my nightstand.

Today I decided to pick up morning pages again. Nope! NOT the “Julia-Cameron-write-3-pages” kind — I’ve never been a big fan of that practice.

Instead I’m referring to the “Connie-Solera-paint-in-a-sketchbook-first-thing-in-the-morning” kind. That’s more my thang.

For the longest time now, in the morning, I’ve been going directly to working on larger pieces, which is great & I’m making huge headway on a big project.

But today I decided it’s time to shake things up & morning pages are something different. They feel like little bursts of poetry, instead of working on a novel.
