Why I Want You To Have A Free Copy Of My Creative Circles Guidebook

Case

When I was in my twenties dancing was a huge part of my life.

I was part of a modern dance troupe at Case Western University, a local salsa group, and I frequented every dance club in a 50 mile radius of my home! Plus during those cold Ohio winters my apartment became an impromptu dance party — disco ball and all!

Though by far, my favorite places to dance were always in gay bars. There I could let loose and express myself freely without ever being hit on, preyed upon, or harassed like I was many times in straight clubs. It was a place filled with many of my artist friends, straight and gay, that yearned for a safe place to express themselves and feel accepted and celebrated for just being themselves.

Even though I wasn’t gay, I was always warmly welcomed and accepted in those spaces. Many times I’d bring my boyfriend with me as well — and all of us would have a blast dancing the night away.

When I learned of the horrible tragedy that happened in a gay bar in Orlando this past Sunday, I felt devastated and helpless, much like yourself I’m sure.

This type of violence and hatred never makes sense, but when it’s done in a school or a church or a safe haven like a gay bar — where Souls marginalized by society can let their guard down and simply be themselves….it hurts and confuses me even more.

This is not the world I want to live in. Nor is this the world I wish to hand over to my son one day. And even though these horrors can leave us feeling insignificant and terrified, it is up to us — each of us, to choose love. To choose peace. To choose something different than hatred, fear, or violence.

For me, it’s quite obvious, my gifts lie in art and fostering creative community. This has been my true calling since my early days of dancing freely in gay bars and on stage. I have always sought out these safe places myself — and as my journey as an artist has evolved, I have been blessed to create these safe spaces for others.

A few years back I gathered my friends Heather Plett, Chris Zydel, Lisa Sonora, and Elizabeth Potts Weinstein and asked them to share their expertise, wisdom, and hearts with me in creating the Creative Circles Guidebook — a guidebook for artists longing to create safe space for others to express themselves freely and find a circle of kindreds to be themselves in.

Since it’s launch in 2013 it has sold thousands of copies and I regularly receive emails from artists sharing how helpful it has been for them in creating workshops, retreats, and creative circles.

We need more safe spaces. As artists it is time to answer the call and choose love, choose unity, choose creativity instead of destruction.

As a prayer for a better world, and in honor of all the lives that have been stolen or broken by tragedy, I am now offering the Creative Circles Guidebook for free — in hope that others will use it to create safe space, healing, and unity in their own communities world wide.

I believe, with all my heart, that every Circle counts. Please feel free to share this with your friends as well.

May we all be happy. May we all be safe. May we all be free.

All My Love,
Connie
