Hi there, Sweet One!
Lora Murphy is today’s Spotlight Artist and her 21 SECRETS Face Time lesson is called, Creating with Your Wild-Woman Soul. Lora paints with encaustics and I remember having trepidation when it came to my own exploration of this medium, and I can tell you, Lora is very convincing when it comes to giving it a try! So not only do you get an intro to encaustic painting, but a lovely lesson in classic portraiture (with soul!), as well! Here is a look at this soft-spoken artist. (OK, I admit, as a silly American, I’m also a little smitten with her accent, which you can’t hear in the interview, so you can check out her lesson!)
Who or what has made the largest impact on the artist you are today?
I was trained as an oil painter in a traditional atelier in Italy, but it was the discovery of Encaustic that had the greatest impact on my painting practice. I discovered it through a friend whom I had an opportunity to watch painting and I was completely bowled over by it! It was “good bye” for my oil painting! LOL
Is there an element about your process that you’re especially passionate about?
Yes, the element of chance! Encaustic is a very unpredictable medium and I love to use an iron to play with edges and see how far I can go without ruining the piece—it’s a thin line but you have to take the chance and not let what you’re painting be too precious!
Is there a “secret message” you often want your work to convey?
Always! I use symbols and codes, words and pictures in my work that are often totally obscured but I know they are there!
What is the one thing you hope we remember from your workshop?
That encaustic is just paint! It’s just like oil or acrylic, it just happens to be hot!!
Where will you be and what will you be doing five years from now?
I will still be here at EOM Studios in Mulranny, Ireland and the second part of our vision for the school will be complete. We will have artists visiting form all over the world. My new studio will be finished and I will be painting there every day!
What a lovely vision Lora has for where she’ll be in five years.
I’m inspired to go do my own daydreaming! To see all of the lovely ways she explores encaustic, be sure to follow her on Instagram.
Hi, my name is Lora Murphy. I am an artist and teacher, and I am totally passionate about Art, travel and life. I firmly believe the act of creating can deeply enrich our lives, and I know that Art can empower us and help us find and heal those dark places that challenge us. I love teaching others how to work with encaustic mediums and to truly enjoy the painting process.
