Today’s #21DaysInMyArtWorld prompt is: Favorite Tool.

Ask any of my students as well and I’m sure they’ll tell you that my answer would be: my beloved Robert Simmons Titanium brushes.

I’m always preaching about the benefits & blessings a good brush bestows. You can own all of the best paint in the world, but if you use a crappy brush, your experience of painting will never be at its juiciest.

#21DaysInMyArtWorld :: Lesson Learned

In high school and art school, way before art journaling was called “art journaling”, I painted in used books because it was way cheaper than buying sketchbooks and I could always find a size or shape that I really liked. Plus, it felt a bit rebellious to do so.

Almost 13 years ago I moved from Cleveland, OH to Phoenix, AZ and I just didn’t want to lug with me boxes and boxes of art journals at the time. So a friend generously offered to store them in her basement.

I received Colors: What They Mean & How To Make Them by Anne Varichon years ago as a gift and fell head over heals in love with it.

Not only is it chocked full of valuable and inspiring information & stories about the history, myth and manufacturing of colors, but I fell in love with the actual book itself. I was smitten with the size, the shape, the matte paper quality and most of all the gorgeous rich yummy photos. All I wanted to do was go crazy painting in it!
