30 Journals 30 Days: SANDY DEMPSEY

How long have you been Art Journaling?

Early 2009 – so only about 18 months.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

It has given me greater insight into who I am and the things that are important to me. And, since attending the Creative Dig workshop last September my art journaling has taken on even greater significance and is an outlet for both my creativity and curiosity. I say curiosity because I usually start my asking a question and love to see what comes up.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Water colors and oils; pictures from magazines; old photos; small sponges; mod-podge; BIG paper; sharpies; crayons;

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

You, of course…

I’m not sure if everyone here counts as an Art Journaler, but these artists work have inspired me to try new things and to keep on keepin’ on… Jamie Ridler, Chris Zydel, & Summer Pierre.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

I was scared to start, thinking I had to do it ‘right’. But, then, with your encouragement and inspiration, I just started to play. I slowly realized that my art journaling could be anything I wanted it to be and I could do it in anyway that felt fun and comfortable to me. My very first art journal was a 99 cent children’s doodle pad, some crayons, sharpies and oil pastels. I then moved up to BIG paper, a journal specifically designed for drawing and painting and different paints. **So, I would say, just start, play, have fun and start with the materials you have.**
